BACKGROUND
Since the Fall of
2000, entering students have been required to obtain a notebook computer, so
that it can be an effective tool integrated into their education at Polytechnic.
This requirement was introduced concurrent with (a) substantial upgrades of our
wired and wireless infrastructure, (b) conversion of many of the classrooms to a
“smart classroom” environment, (c) the introduction of Curriculum2000, a
revision to a 4x4 format that would concurrently benefit from the other
improvements.
In the past, entering students had to lease a specific model through
Polytechnic, which arranged for the software, service center, warranties,
insurance, and accessories in a “bundled” package. Students were given the
option of purchasing the computer at the end of the lease period, at a very
nominal price.
Starting with the Fall
2003 entering class the Lease program will no longer be available for
incoming students. Incoming students are given hardware specifications and it
is their responsibility to obtain a laptop that meets these specs by the start
of the school year.
